Car insurance denied, now what?

Annoying, your car insurance has been denied, now what? Your car insurance may have been refused for various reasons, for example, because you have been issued a driving ban or have not paid your insurance premium on time. It is then difficult to get new car insurance. We are happy to explain what you can do if your car insurance has been denied!

Can an insurer just refuse me?

Yes, an insurer may always refuse you. This is because they have no duty of acceptance. Only a health insurance company is obligated to cover you for health insurance. If an auto insurer thinks you are too great a risk, they may reject your insurance application. There can be several reasons for this.

When assessing an insurance application, insurers use the Roy Data database and the database of Stichting CIS. This contains your claim history. For example, they can see if you have a criminal history, how many claims you have claimed and if you have ever committed insurance fraud. In fact, these are all situations in which you will receive a CIS registration. This information is then accessible to all affiliated insurers and agents. Based on this information, they can refuse you car insurance. With a CIS registration, there is a good chance that no regular insurance company will want to insure you. This is because you then pose too great a risk.

Insurers mainly try to determine how great the moral hazard is. In the case of someone with a CIS registration, moral hazard is often estimated to be greater. This assumes that someone with a CIS registration is less compliant with insurance rules or paying the premium.

Requesting information from the CIS Foundation and the Roy Data database.

If you want to know what personal data is registered in the CIS database, you can submit a request for inspection to Stichting CIS. Through the CIS website, you can fill out and sign the online form. Then you can send it, with a copy of a valid ID, by mail or post. Within a maximum of 1 month (but the aim is within 10 working days) after receipt of your request for inspection, you will receive an overview of the registered data and information about its origin. You will then see which insurer has registered you and when this occurred. Are your personal data not in the CIS database? Then you will also be notified of this.

If you would like to know how many claim-free years you have in the Roy Data database, you can submit a request through the EPS Foundation (Efficient Processes Claims Insurers). On the website you will find an online form for a request for inspection. You can fill it out and send it directly, along with a copy of your ID. You will then receive the information as soon as possible via e-mail.

In both cases, unfortunately, we cannot submit a request for you, even if you purchase car insurance through us. This is because, as an intermediary, Alpina has no insight into your personal data, due to privacy laws.

Objecting if you have been (wrongly) rejected

Is your CIS registration incorrect or unjustified? Then you can submit a request for correction via Stichting CIS to the insurer that registered you. Through the website of CIS you can indicate on a form which data are incorrect and why you think that is. Stichting CIS will then forward the request to your insurer. You then have to wait and see whether the insurer accepts or refuses your request. Is your request refused? Then you can file a complaint with your insurer's complaints committee. There is also the possibility of submitting a complaint to the Financial Services Complaints Institute. The final step is to take your complaint to court, but this often involves high legal costs. Therefore, you should carefully consider whether it is worth it.

If you think that the number of claim-free years in Roy-data is not correct, you should contact your previous insurer. This is because Stichting EPS cannot adjust claim-free years.
